Suspicion of murder: police arrest police officers

A young woman in London is on her way home after visiting a friend – but she does not arrive at her apartment. After a week, two people are arrested. One of them is suspected of murder. It’s a policeman.

In the UK, an elite police officer has been arrested on suspicion of murder. The official, who belongs to a unit to protect parliamentarians and diplomats, has been in custody since Tuesday evening, the London police said on Wednesday. Also on Tuesday, a woman was arrested in the course of the same investigation.

The investigation is about the disappearance of a 33-year-old in London. The woman had left a friend’s home on the evening of March 3rd to walk home. The walk would have taken about 50 minutes, she never arrived at her apartment. The police have been asking the public for information on the case for days.

Officials raided buildings in London and Kent and a wooded area near Ashford on Wednesday. In the evening, the Metropolitan Police reported the discovery of body parts in the forest. The identity of the dead person has not yet been confirmed, said Commissioner Cressida Dick. It could take a “considerable time” for clarity to prevail. The site is about 120 kilometers from the place where the young woman was last seen.

Horror at the police

The suspected 48-year-old police officer was arrested in Kent on Tuesday. He is charged with immoral exposure in addition to the murder charges. A 39-year-old woman suspected of being involved in the crime was also arrested with him.

Dick said the detective’s arrest caused “shock and anger” among the public and police. “I speak for all of my colleagues when I say that we are appalled by this terrible, terrible news.” The task of the police is to “control the streets and protect people”.

Previously, London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan had already shown understanding when people are “shocked and concerned” by the developments. He welcomed that the official’s case had been passed on to a supervisory body which is now to conduct an independent investigation.
