Later as a gift for managers and friends called “house reservation” and it was such a success that it began to be marketed as a winter season beer. The drink is part of the German Bock category. It is traditionally prepared for religious holidays and Christmas. It is made to be consumed in times of cold weather. Due to this, Christmas Eve is only sold in the season that runs from October to February. It belongs to the lager family.

The name suggests that it is a strong drink and began to prepare for the fourteenth or fifteenth centuries in the city of Einbeck in northern Germany.

The recipe is said to have arisen in a Munich monastery. It was made with the purpose of serving as “food” for the monks during Lent, as they were only allowed to drink drinks.

Bock beer can be dark or light, it is always full-bodied and contains a high degree of alcohol. (between 4.5 and 6.5%). Most are made with barley. There are varieties known as Doppelbock, Weizenbock, Maibock y Eisbock. Some are produced to be consumed in spring and others in autumn.

Currently it is possible to have Bock beer all year round, however, due to the nature of its flavor it is preferable to taste it in winter. In part, it is a fermented drink that needs several days to ripen at very low temperatures.

There are different brands and varieties of Bock beer around the world. For example, in the United States there are the Hopflake and White Christmas brands; in Belgium they have the Artois Bock; in England the Cains Double Bock; in Argentina the Araucana Negra Bock, among others.
