Almost everyone in the world has at least one wound anywhere on the body. A cut with a sharp object, such as glass or metal. Perhaps due to a fall or more dangerous accidents, but in general, it is very common to find a person with a mark on their skin. The scars are almost impossible to disappear and for some it can represent an aesthetic problem.

However, decades of research recently may have found a solution. For now, a drug is being targeted, which stimulates the growth of normal skin to make scar-free after a stitch joint. Previously, although it was an aesthetic problem, the scientists of this research point out health problems as well.
Specifically, according to the Stanford Medicne website, “scar tissue has no hair follicles or sweat glands and is inflexible and weaker than skin,” they explained. They also detailed that “scars can limit our body’s ability to move and adapt to changes in temperature.” Therefore, it is not about removing a brand, but about generating functional tissue for the human body.
Michael Longaker, lead author of the study, says he found – in part – the answer to a question asked 34 years ago. He says that in 1987 he supported another scientist while they carried out life-saving research on fetuses. So, at that time he had to study why wounds in fetuses heal without leaving scars. “Since then, my research has expanded into many other areas. But trying to understand scar formation has always been an active area of interest, ”Longaker said.
The scars left by the wounds
As in fetuses, something similar occurs with wounds and scars in the elderly. Therefore, they determined that the elongation or stretch that the skin can be plays an important role in the healing of a wound in it. So the job was to find a way for the skin not to stretch further and thus be able to heal a wound.
The first thing you think about, experts say, is not to make a point join. However, this is the fastest way to heal. Otherwise, if you wait for the skin to grow back, in a wound, you can expose yourself to a bacterial infection or the person to bleed to death. Consequently, even if you leave the problems mentioned, you have to join immediately.
In this way, scientists aim to reduce forces at each edge of a healing incision. This tension, which is what ends up generating the marks, causes a gene called engrailed. “This gene helps create a protein that is sometimes found in fibroblasts, a type of skin cell that generates scars,” the study authors detail.
The way to block the gene
Finally, with the application of a drug called verteporfin, this gene could be blocked. In fact they first of all performed mouse skin tests in a laboratory. Then they ran tests on mice that were cut under anesthesia and the drug worked and also generated new skin of the same quality in place of the scars. Even, as they themselves express it, they were surprised even by the level of the mice’s fur, which was completely recovered.
“There must be three things in a wound for wound healing to be a true regeneration of the foot. The skin should have normal glands and hair follicles, it should look normal under a microscope, and it should be as strong as normal skin. The first thing that surprised us was all the hair from the healed wound. We were also able to see normal glands and showed that the skin was as strong as healthy skin, ”concluded Michael Longaker.
