Ahrweiler – They were downright surprised by the floods. It was not until late Wednesday afternoon that the fire brigade drove through the streets of Ahrweiler and warned the residents of the flood with a megaphone announcement.
“Attention attention! This is the fire brigade speaking. The risk of flooding is very high on the Ahr. Floods, power outages and traffic obstructions can be expected within the next 24 hours.
Pay attention to your own safety and to the instructions of the local emergency services!
Avoid standing in cellars, underground garages and lower areas if possible. Secure buildings close to the flood and remove your cars from the danger areas. Educate yourself through the media and keep an eye on the weather. Pay attention to your own safety and to the instructions of the local emergency services. ”
The residents only had a few hours to protect themselves from the masses of water. Shortly afterwards the storm broke out. The water flooded the streets, and at 10 p.m. the emergency services announced the evacuation.
But by then the water in Ahrweiler was knee-high in the streets. Most of the residents could no longer leave their houses and apartments and were stuck in their homes.
From the windows they watched helplessly as the water rose higher and higher. And tore their belongings with them.
