Several low- and middle-income countries are calling for patents to be released so that covid-19 vaccines can be mass-produced and accessible.
But rich countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Switzerland and European nations, oppose the proposal. They argue that these patents – the intellectual property rights of drugs – are necessary to incentivize drug research and development.
