A slight earthquake occurred on Monday (March 15) in the Rhein-Sieg district, as it has now become known. The quake reached a magnitude between 1.7 and 2.0 on the Richter scale and was recorded by several geological services.

The University of Strasbourg initially even determined a magnitude of 3.0. However, this is more due to the lack of data.
Earthquake in Wachtberg in the Rhein-Sieg district
The earthquake station in Bensberg near Cologne, however, found a magnitude of 1.7. The epicenter was therefore around 8.15 p.m. on Monday (March 15) in Wachtberg-Pech.
The State Office for Geology, Raw Materials and Mining in Freiburg in Baden-Württemberg also recorded a value of 1.7 magnitude on the Richter scale.
Thundering, roaring, vibrations: earthquakes are palpable in the Rhein-Sieg district
It was a slight tremor, but it could have been felt in many parts of the Rhein-Sieg district. A slight thunder or roar, accompanied by subliminal vibrations, are not uncommon in this strength.
Various perception reports have been received by the geological services. Residents also confirmed on Twitter and Facebook that they had noticed a slight shock.
Epicenter of the earthquake in Wachtberg
The epicenter was therefore in Wachtberg, but the quake could also be felt in Meckenheim and Rheinbach.
According to consistent calculations, the quake took place at a depth of around 10 kilometers. Damage from such a tectonic earthquake is not to be expected.
Earthquakes in the Eifel region are not uncommon
Light earthquakes like this are not uncommon in the region around the Eifel. According to the records, a comparable quake only occurred almost exactly a year ago.
An earthquake also occurred in Aachen in January 2021. At that time the tremors were clearly noticeable. The strength was 2.8 on the Richter scale. The quake also took place at a depth of about 10 kilometers at that time. (jv)
