During his first visit to India, the US Secretary of Defense put India under pressure: If the country does not stop its planned weapons purchases in Russia, sanctions are threatened.
The new US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, has called on partner country India to refrain from purchasing Russian military equipment. On his inaugural visit to the capital New Delhi on Saturday, Austin referred to S-400 anti-aircraft missiles, for which India has already paid the Russian supplier a deposit of $ 800 million.
“In any case, we urge all our allies, our partners, to refrain from Russian equipment (…) and really to refrain from any purchases that would trigger sanctions on our part,” said Austin at a meeting with his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh.
The US has already imposed sanctions on Turkey after its NATO ally bought S-400 missiles in Russia. The US competes with China for influence in the Asia-Pacific region.
