Toyota is one of the brands that most collaborates with other manufacturers. In just the last few years he has worked with Mazda, BMW, Suzuki and Subaru. His next adventure, according to the South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo, will be with Tesla for the joint development of a new affordable electric vehicle.
A spokesman for the Japanese auto industry assured Chosun Ilbo that Toyota and Tesla have had talks about the possibility of developing a small electric SUV since last year. Toyota would provide the platform for the vehicle, while Tesla would be the provider of the software and the battery pack and electric motors.
Both manufacturers have been looking for a way to increase their share of the electric vehicle market with a more affordable model for some time. In early 2020, Tesla hinted to be working on a lower priced hatchback than the Model 3; Toyota, for its part, announced the premiere of a modular global platform for its future electric vehicles.
Neither Tesla nor Toyota have confirmed anything. If it becomes a reality, the collaboration would help Tesla increase its sales in Japan, as Toyota take a solid step into the growing category of electric cars – where it currently has no representative outside of Japan.
