This is how we have filmed our Toyota GR Yaris

After having explained why we bought this car and telling you how was the order and delivery of our rabid sports utility, we continue with the saga of articles dedicated to the Toyota GR Yaris. This time we are going to address a point that many will find boring: how we have filmed our Toyota GR Yaris. But whether it is interesting or not does not diminish the importance of this step, which after all is essential to guarantee the correct operation and long-term reliability of the vehicle.

This is the engine of a Toyota GR Yaris inside

I have to admit that having done the rodaje al Toyota GR Yaris It has reminded me a lot of the first dates I had with me now a woman. Because with each outing that we did together when we started to see each other it allowed us to get to know each other a little better. At the beginning you are always cautious because at the end of the day it is an unknown person (or a car, in this case). But as time goes by, day after day and appointment after appointment, you begin to discover things that you love, details that end up making you fall in love.

Saving the distances, those first dates have been similar to making the first kilometers aboard the Toyota GR Yaris. Because despite the excitement of releasing a car -and more one of this type-, you have to be able to contain yourself and to be more precise, to control your right foot. Little by little, as you accumulate more and more meters, you can begin to demand a little from the engine and it will begin to show you its true personality. Until there comes a time when you can finally ruthlessly step on the accelerator and that’s when you get to know his true face.

What does the user manual say about the running-in of the Toyota GR Yaris?

Before telling you how we have done the break-in period to our unit, let’s see what exactly the user manual says about it. And here comes the first problem that we have encountered: it does not put the same in the digital manual that anyone can download on the Toyota website in Spain than in the one that comes in the car. I explain.

Before we got the GR Yaris (test), perhaps to calm our cravings, we spent time gathering as much information as possible about the car. Among that information was the digital user manual, which we read cover to cover. In it we find, specifically on page 131, a section entitled “Braking your new Toyota”. We cannot put an image due to copyright, but you can see it yourself if you download the manual in the owners section of the brand’s website.

What does that section have to do with filming? Well, everything, because on page 129 of the English manual that same point is called like this: “Breaking in your new Toyota”. Translated into Spanish it means “Filming in your new Toyota”. And There you go. A translation error could cause an owner to overlook the recommendations, although it must be recognized that at least the advice given below is perfectly understood. They are divided into two parts, one dedicated to the brakes and the other to the engine and other mechanical components, as follows:

“To increase the useful life of the vehicle, it is recommended to observe the following precautions:

  • For the first 300 km (186 miles): Avoid sudden stops.

For the first 1000 km (621 miles):

  • Do not drive at very high speeds.
  • Avoid sudden accelerations.
  • Do not drive continuously in low gears.
  • Do not drive at a constant speed for long periods. “

But perhaps more surprising than the above is the fact that this section does not appear directly in the physical manual that comes with the car. In fact, the digital manual is much longer than the paper manual, so there will surely be many other points that are omitted in the second.

It is not about doing kilometers in ‘Flanders mode’ and in sixth

Before continuing, a clarification: do not take at face value the way in which we have done the filming, because you will always find different opinions on how you should proceed. In our case, in addition to the recommendations given in the digital manual, we have followed the advice of an automotive engineer friend of Periodismo del Motor, who gave us a series of guidelines to apply during the first 1,000 kilometers.

To what the manual indicates, that is, not to drive at very high speeds, avoid sudden accelerations, avoid driving continuously in low gears and avoid moving at constant speeds for long periods, he added the following:

– Putting a certain load on the engine from time to time without going over the lap limits in the next section, trying not to exceed 50% of the accelerator pedal travel.

Increase this rev limit progressively As you add kilometers: up to 4,000 rpm between 0 and 250 km, up to 4,500 rpm between 250 and 500 km, up to 5,000 rpm between 500 and 750 km and up to 5,500 rpm between 750 and 1,000 km.

Do not keep the engine at the same revolutionsTry to continually vary the number of turns so that the different internal components seat correctly.

Use all gears of the gearbox frequently to the extent possible. This way, you ensure that the wear is uniform and the operation is identical when engaging any gear.

Avoid short trips or start the engine for short periods of time. It is important to ensure good lubrication and that optimum operating temperatures of fluids and components are achieved.

– When you reach the recommended running-in kilometers (1,000 km in this case), you can put more load on the engine, but it continues to climb progressively.

There are those who recommend change the oil Once you have finished filming, to remove from the circuit all those debris that could have been generated during this phase. Toyota in this case does not specify it, indicating that the first revision – like all future ones – must be passed at 10,000 kilometers or a year, whichever comes first. In our case, we will carry out an oil change (engine, gearbox, differentials and rear axle coupling system) when we reach approximately 3,000 kilometers.

As we have said, this is what we have done, but do not take it at face value. Always follow the recommendations that the dealer gives you or those that appear in the manual.

In the next installment of this series of articles dedicated to tell about our experience with the Toyota GR Yaris We will make a comparison between our unit with Circuit Pack and one without this option. We will provide interesting data that you may not have seen until now.
