Celebrations and the fear of a regrowth
Last week, Chacabuco Park had already been the scene of a crowd of boys gathered with ice cream parlors, drinks and music. Although the meetings are outdoors, where they are allowed with a limit of up to 20 people per group, most young people do not respect social distancing or wear masks.
The situation keeps the authorities on alert just at the moment when there is an increase in cases of coronavirus in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA). In the last daily report, the Government reported 11,765 cases, of which 4761 were in the province of Buenos Aires and 1076 in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA). Ten days ago, on December 20, the figures reached half and up to a third in relation to the current ones: 4116 cases in total, of which 1276 were reported in Buenos Aires territory and 391 in the Buenos Aires district.
The death rates follow the trend: 145 were reported in the last daily part, while 50 had been announced 10 days ago. In the Casa Rosada they explain this growth through a combination of social relaxation in behavior habits before the virus and the crowds that became more visible with the arrival of the meetings at the end of the year.
President Alberto Fernández referred to the issue this Thursday, assuring that December “was a month of relaxation” in the face of the coronavirus. He said there were “many social gatherings and marches.” “Also something I saw on the 24th at night: young boys who gather in squares without chinstraps and end up crowded, as well as the clandestine parties that are promoted on social networks ”, he remarked. That, he said, generated “a breeding ground” for the virus and caused the disease to circulate “more quickly.”
In this context, the president warned that the Government is evaluating that the security forces take to the streets “To dispel the people.” In addition, he anticipated that they will do a “weekly monitoring” of the contagion curve.
