Jesus Ramirez Cuevas, general coordinator of Social Communication and spokesman for the Government of the Republic, shared a video to show the ravages of the fire in Tamaulipas that led to the blackouts that occurred throughout the country on Monday, December 28.
“Thanks to the CFE, most of the country was electrified. Today the supporters of its privatization have launched a smear campaign following a failure caused by a fire in Tamaulipas that they want to question”, Wrote on twitter the spokesman for the president of Mexico Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
And is that Pedro Granados, state coordinator of Civil Protection of Tamaulipas, pointed out that the official letter shown during the virtual conference of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), in which it was pointed out that a fire in a pasture in the municipality of Padilla damaged the transmission lines of the parastatal, is apocryphal.
On Monday thousands of Mexicans began flooding social networks with puzzled messages about the supply of electricity.
According to the version of the head of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), Manuel Bartlett, the failure was caused by a fire that broke out in the municipality of Padilla, Tamaulipas, which affected two transmission lines between Linares and Ciudad Victoria, triggering a problem on three other lines: two between Mazatlán and Tepic and one between Durango and Fresnillo.
The lines are located in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas and Linares, Nuevo León, where the Lajas and Güémez substations are located. When the National Electric System (SEN) was out of service, it suffered an imbalance that left 10.3 million users in the country without electricity.
In detail, the official explained that cold front number 23 brought with it strong winds in the area, to this is added that it is the dry season of the year in which the grasslands tend to suffer fires. So, An outbreak of fire that appeared in the place was fanned by the wind, in such a way that it affected 30 hectares in the mentioned municipality.
To support his explanation, engineer Peña used slides to locate the area damaged by the fire and showed photos of the fire that affected the transmission lines.
López Obrador, for his part, assured that one of the objectives of his government is “move the CFE forward as we are moving PEMEX forward [Petróleos Mexicanos]”. This after making an account of the processes of privatization of Mexican electricity that began, according to the president, with the reforms made during the government of the former president by the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Salinas de Gortari.
Regarding the demand for the resignation of Manuel Bartlet, the president implied that people dissatisfied with the decisions of the head of the CFE are actually in conflict with decisions made by the Executive Power, and not by the head of the Federal Commission Of electricity. “It’s not with Manuel Bartlet, it’s with the president”, Assured Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Among his claims, the president accused newspapers like Reform and The country of being sponsored by foreign companies that have concessions for the sale of electricity to the CFE. “These foreign companies and the national ones have spokespersons in Mexico and abroad. For example, the newspaper The country of Spain is a defender of the privatization of the electricity industry, because these companies also have shares, surely, in this newspaper “, were the words of the president against the Spanish newspaper.
About the Mexican newspaper, Reform, the president accused him of being the one who “Represents that private sector, national or foreign”. In this way, the president explains that, after the blackout last Monday, “They make a scandal, and they assume that it is already the CFE debacle. Which they would like, that they long for, so that the sector is delivered to individuals ”.
López Obrador even spoke of the current management in the country of internet services: “How long have individuals been managing the communication system? and 80% of the national territory does not have internet, why? ”. The president explains this by pointing out that the interests of the companies that provide internet to the Mexican population are not oriented to the development of the country, but rather to the search for the market. “Where poor people live, in the mountains, in the valleys, in the deserts, in remote places, there is no sign, why? Because it is not business “the president explained.
