According to the report delivered by the Bogotá Mayor’s Office at midnight, a total of 91 people were injured. Later, the Defense Minister, Diego Molano, also referred to the attacked policemen.

The report delivered by the Mayor’s Office in the early morning of May 5 indicated that:

  • 25 CAI were affected. Three of them were cremated, 19 vandalized and three completely destroyed.
  • 30 TransMilenio buses were vandalized. Some 74 zone buses were also affected. Four of them were incinerated and eight stations were vandalized.

Late Tuesday night, the rallies began in various parts of the city.

According to reports from the authorities and citizens on social networks, after 8 o’clock at night, vandalism began to be registered in the CAIs of Bogotá. There were also clashes between civilians and police.

For this reason, Mayor Claudia López asked the Ministry of Defense for help to protect “stations and URIs.”

“Given that we have information of possible vandalism at Stations and URIs where 2,825 detainees are overcrowded, we have asked MinDefensa that the Public Force help us guard these detention centers and prevent them from putting the lives of those deprived of liberty at risk”, the mayor wrote on her Twitter account.

Then he confirmed that in different parts of the city they tried to burn policemen alive.

“The 22 human rights commissions that we activate have been preventing and protecting abuses of citizens. But the violent escalation tonight is brutal. 15 CAIs vandalized, police shot, wounded with a knife, 15 tried to burn them alive in CAI Aurora ”.

Police overflights

Amid the confusion of the events that occurred at night, citizens recorded helicopter overflights at various points in the city.

People did not explain what was happening and what they were downloading at different points.

For this reason, the mayor came out to explain what was happening. He indicated that these helicopters were evacuating the wounded police officers.
