The last time any club in Central America went to the quarterfinals

The first leg matches of the round of 16 of the Concachampions 2021 and no team of Central America got a good local result. Of the five participants, all lost except Marathon who ended up equaling 2-2 against Portland Timbers. Very worrying situation that could end with all Central Americans eliminated.

At FCA we decided to travel back in time and see when was the last time that any team from the region managed to reach the quarterfinal stage in the Concacaf Champions League. This is how we saw that in the 2015/16 edition, there were no representatives from Central America who managed to pass the group stage, format in which it was played at that time.

For that competition I was Saprissa, Herediano, Isidro Metapán, San Francisco, Comunicaciones, Motagua, Wálter Ferreti, Olimpia, Santa Tecla, Arabe Unido and Municipal. Almost all in different areas and some being favorites to move on to the next phase. Despite that, none of them could finish first in the group and they ended up watching the tie from home.

The Purples they were seconds behind Santos Laguna, who won every game. The Team and Metapán could not before Tigres, finalist of that edition, although the Florists managed to draw a draw. San Francisco was one of the closest to passing by being only one point below Querétaro, who beat local. Communications finished last of their group with Los Angeles Galaxy and Central (Trinidad and Tobago)

Motagua was second in America, champion in that edition, and Wálter Ferreti finished without points. Olimpia was on the verge of qualifying, but Seattle surpassed it by one unit. Much further was Municipal and Santa Tecla with Real Salt Lake, which was the leader with a difference of 6 points. To end, Arabe Unido also saw the competition from the outside as they were escorted by DC United.

It was a very bad Concachampions for the Central Americans in 2015/16, there were many qualified and none could pass the first phase. Now there are only 5 and it is almost necessary to look for the epic of visitor to get a passport to rooms. The possibility that the absence of teams from the region will be repeated in the next tie is very great.
