The Field Liaison Table, made up of Argentine Rural Confederations (CRA), the Argentine Rural Society, the Coninagro cooperatives and the Argentine Agrarian Federation, will meet tomorrow for Zoom to evaluate the response to the recent official decision to ban exports of corn that, they fear, could be followed by more measures against the sector. In addition, on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. the CRA Board of Directors will meet to evaluate concrete responses not only to the government’s decision, but to the demands of the rural bases.
Thus explained the head of CRA, Jorge Chemes, in statements to the program “CNN Campo”, by CNN radio. “The mood of the producers is very angry; the contained anger broke out that came from various other measures. It came to light, there is a lot of anger. People call for immediate protest measures. We will hear from the Confederations on what action to take, but this will not go unnoticed; it is an outrage to the producer’s job, a totally unconsulted measure. When the country needs us to produce more, with 40 million people living in poverty, everything possible is done to stop production, “said Chemes.
Consulted on proposals that will be debated in Assemblies to be held in Bell Ville (Córdoba), Pergamino (Buenos Aires) and other parts of the country, in which self-convened producers demand a strike with the cessation of commercialization of grain and property and cargo control in the routes, a luck of lock-out employers, Chemes admitted that the CRA Board of Directors will evaluate them at its meeting on Wednesday. “I am hearing it from our rural producer bases and from the self-organized; there is a firm position of protest. It is what predominates most at this time”, He said, and pointed out that the issue will also be debated tomorrow at the Liaison Table.
In that sense, from Bell Ville, the self-convened producer, German SuarezHe told CNN Radio, “The government keeps surprising us with old recipes. In this area we are enduring a very worrying drought and now the intervention of the market ends up putting the strawberry for dessert. We don’t know what the government is going to do from now on. surely it will come with an increase in withholdings ”. AND Roman Gutierrez, a self-convened producer from Pergamino, added: “If we ask for a marketing stoppage, it must be done with cargo control in all provinces. The last strike was not 100% effective because it was a laugh: many companies that have a presence in the entities sent trucks ”.
Date and duration
Regarding the date and duration of the protest, Chemes said that there are rural people from the interior who are “raising it specifically”, but it has not been decided yet. “Tomorrow we will have more information from other entities and on Wednesday in the case of CRA we will have something concrete to raise it,” he said.
According to Chemes, “there is a wrong concept of the government about the production of the field; sometimes it seems that they are looking for conflict scenarios, it seems that they want to fight, instead of seeking harmony, the issue is the fight, the confrontation, always disturbing and blocking the productive system. It turns out that now that people have to be fed, measures are taken that only cause retraction ”.
The head of CRA recognized that the field failed to make itself heard by the government. “That is not new,” he noted. “I am convinced that the field for many years failed to generate a strong lobby as did the industry or the oil sector. The formulas and tools that we use did not generate that place of force, and we are in a very uncomfortable place in the chain: we are the last link and we cannot transmit to anyone what comes from above. But we have to generate different strategies, so that they listen to us. There is a 14 point job that the field needs. They never called us, they didn’t read it, ”he complained.
There could be more
He also admitted that the closure of corn exports could be followed by measures in other sectors. “Everything can be, the government accustomed us to saying one thing and doing another.” Just as he closed corn exports, he could do it with wheat, he gave as an example. “If the objective is prices, they can transfer them to other products. But to think that this is how they can manage prices and production is to live on another planet. That does not lead to anything good, and it does not solve structural problems ”.
Chemes announced that the Argentine Agroindustrial Council, a body that was received by Cristina Kirchner, presented a plan and initiated a rapprochement with the government, and will soon issue a statement protesting the closure of corn exports. “They are waiting for a couple of signatures,” he said about it. In turn, he acknowledged the internal tension in CRA due to his participation in the Council. “I admit that I had to juggle,” he said. In fact, he admitted that the Board of Directors of the entity he presides over will evaluate “if they don’t want us to participate more; This unfortunately deteriorates the relationship: there are sectors in the chain that clearly benefit from this measure, and others that we harm ourselves. And I said it: there is no use for someone to benefit at the expense of others ”, referring, for example, to the Center for Poultry Processing Companies (CEPA), chaired by Roberto Domenech, Council member. Poultry farms are among the supposed beneficiaries of the closure of corn exports, to the extent that this contributes to reducing the price of grain, an input for chicken feed.
