The Alpine LMP1 will carry ballast at the start of the WEC in Spa

The Alpine A480 LMP1 will be weighed down compared to the Toyota Hypercar in the first round of the 2021 Endurance World Championship: the 6 hours of Spa.

The minimum weight of 930 kg for the Gibson-powered Oreca prototype, which ran as the Rebellion R-13 in the WEC In 2018/19 and 2019/20, it compares to the 824kg he started with last season before a performance handicap system came into play.

The weight penalty is part of a series of measures designed to bring the performance of the Signatech-managed Alpine into the same window as the newer ones. Le Mans Hypercars.

For the 6 hours of Spa From May 1, that applies only to Toyota’s new GR010 Hybrid, after the Glickenhaus team chose to delay the debut of its new 007 LMH. The minimum weight of the hybrid LMH prototypes is 1040 kg.

The LMH rules have been established to reduce the speed of cars of the highest category of the WEC in approximately five seconds per lap on a normal circuit and in 10 seconds on the 24 hours of Le Mans.

The rules for WEC 2021 allow non-hybrid LMP1 prototypes to continue to compete in the category as “grandfathered” cars, but with reduced performance.

The power curve to which the non-hybrid Alpine’s normally-aspirated Gibson V8 must adhere was released Friday night along with the minimum weight on the performance balance table for the Hypercar class at Spa.

It prescribes a maximum output of 450kW or 600hp, a notable reduction from the nearly 700hp that the Gibson is believed to have produced with unlimited fuel flow at last year’s WEC.

The maximum power output of Toyota’s 3.5-liter biturbo V6 and its combined front axle energy recovery system is listed in the BoP table as 520kW, equivalent to almost 700hp. The Alpine will be able to consume a total of 920 megajoules per lap, compared to 964 for the Toyota.

The only Alpine in the running, to be driven by Nicolas Lapierre, André Negrao and Matthieu Vaxiviere, will race in a low downforce setup on all circuits at this year’s WEC as part of its performance reduction.

Chevrolet’s mid-engined Corvette C8.R GTE Pro will race at Spa with a significantly revised BoP from which it proved off pace in its only previous WEC appearance in Austin in February 2020.

The minimum weight of the only Corvette Racing present, piloted by Oliver Gavin and Antonio García, has been reduced by five kg, to 1235 kg, and the diameter of the engine intake flange has been increased from 41.3 mm to 43.5 mm.

The Corvette team, led by Pratt & Miller, is participating in Spa as part of the preparations for its return to Le Mans later this season after a year’s absence.
