Syria aid – interjection: Germany pays, the dictators laugh – politics abroad

Ten billion euros of German tax money has so far flowed into the care of Syrian refugees in and around the battered country. The federal government has just pledged a further 1.738 billion to alleviate the suffering of the Syrians.

It’s as classy as it is short-sighted.

Because while Germany and the rest of the civilized world pays to give millions of people the bare minimum, the root of the problem is not even approached.

► The Syrian dictator Assad is still firmly in the saddle and terrorizing his people. While he is enjoying life in his luxury palace, thousands continue to sit in his torture prisons and the people in his empire bombed by him barely have enough to eat.

► Just a few days ago, the Russian despot Putin bombed a hospital and trucks with aid deliveries in northwest Syria. He also blocks any political solution to the conflict that would bring Assad to an end.

► The Iranian dictator Khamenei continues to use Syria as a springboard for attacks on Israel and his proxy war against the USA, which repeatedly provokes Israeli and American counter-attacks on Syrian soil.

Instead of finally putting an end to the hustle and bustle of the three despots and giving millions of Syrians back the chance of a life in dignity, Germany, Europe and the USA limit themselves to the (extremely expensive!) Management of misery.

Especially Germany, whose voice would still have weight in Moscow and Tehran, dwarfs itself to the level of an aid organization, where it needs a powerful political actor.

The three dictators who continue to devastate Syria can really only laugh about that.
