Kinniya – At least six people drowned in a ferry accident in northeast Sri Lanka, including four school children. Eleven people were taken to the hospital.
Three more children are missing, the police said on Tuesday. Navy divers are looking for them.
The accident happened near Kinniya, a coastal town about 260 kilometers northeast of the capital Colombo.
According to initial investigations, the ship was overloaded and capsized. It was apparently not approved for passenger transport.
There were many school children on board. There was initially no information on the exact number of passengers.
