It shouldn’t be anymore. Summer just doesn’t get going anymore. Now we also get the MAUgust.
At the start of the week, Tief Ferdinand brings clouds, rain and also thunderstorms. The temperatures should be between 19 and 24 degrees and thus almost everywhere not even crack the 25 degree mark necessary for a summer day.
And that, of all things, in its warmest phase.
“We’re getting autumn weather. The temperatures drop to 10 degrees and below in places at night, ”says graduate meteorologist Dominik Jung from the Q.met weather service to BILD.
According to the monthly forecast from the US weather service NOAA, August in Western and Central Europe will be significantly too cold. In the end, the month could end up 2 degrees below the climate mean.
“The low pressure areas continue to give each other the handle over Central Europe, so that more rain is guaranteed in the coming days with only moderately warm air masses,” said meteorologist Simon Trippler from the German Weather Service (DWD).
Jetstream turns the summer off
“The jet stream is to blame for the current weather situation. The strong wind band is currently very far south. Therefore, very cool air masses can flow from the north to us in Central Europe. At the same time, the way from North Africa is free for very hot air masses from the Sahara. But they only come to the south and south-east of Europe, ”says graduate meteorologist Jung.
The jet stream lies like an invisible wall between the two air masses and separates them from each other. There is a risk of storms at the border!
The jet stream should get moving again, shift. It’s like a wall. The cold air masses from the north flow partly as far as Spain, whereas extreme heat can flow to south-east Europe. But right now the situation is deadlocked. As long as the jet stream does not shift, nothing will happen!
Weather expert Jung: “Of course, the question arises: Will this extreme heat from Southeastern Europe come to us soon? Not at first. The heat is stuck from Sicily to Italy to Greece and Turkey. 40 to 47 degrees are reached there every day until Friday. “
The firefighters in numerous tourist resorts on the Mediterranean do not come to rest: Hundreds of devastating forest fires continue to rage. After a weekend with values around 44 degrees, the temperatures continue to rise. Values of up to 47 degrees are expected on Monday and Tuesday.
Dozens of hotels and villages have again been evacuated in southern Turkey. Italy reported more than 800 fires, including 250 in Sicily alone. In the Greek Peloponnese, residents and tourists also had to be brought to safety. Meanwhile, the emergency services reported a new fire on the island of Rhodes.
For Turkey it is the worst fires in a decade. According to the authorities, almost 95,000 hectares of land have been destroyed by fires since the beginning of the year. In the years 2008 to 2020 there was an average of around 13,000 hectares in the same period.
Climatologist Dr. Karsten Brandt from Donnerwetter.de: “Our rainy summer continues. The scorching heat in the Mediterranean region lasts until Saturday. The temperatures in Germany are half the values in the Mediterranean area. “
