BUENOS AIRES, Apr 25 (Reuters) – San Lorenzo de Almagro won 2-1 as a visitor to River Plate on Sunday in one of the classics of Argentine football, as part of the eleventh round of the local league.
With the victory, San Lorenzo reached 18 points and shared with River and Racing Club third place in the Group A standings, led by Colón de Santa Fe with 21 points and Estudiantes de La Plata as guard with 19.
“We are happy for the victory, it was vital for us, to get among the top four places, and luckily we were able to obtain the result on an always difficult court,” experienced goalkeeper Sebastián Torrico told local television.
San Lorenzo’s goals were scored by Nicolás Fernández and Jalil Elías at 16 and 52 minutes, while River discounted at 75 minutes through the young scorer Federico Girotti.
“It was noted that we proposed our idea of going out to attack, but we were unlucky, I don’t know what happened,” Girotti said after his team’s defeat.
In other Group A matches, Racing Club beat Colón 2-1 at home, and Estudiantes de La Plata won 1-0 in their visit to Rosario Central.
For Group B, Vélez Sarsfield obtained the first place for the league for the title by beating Lanús 2-1 as a visitor thanks to goals from Matías de los Santos and Federico Mancuello. Lanús’ only goal was made by Alexander Bernabei.
With the victory, Vélez reached 25 points in the table of positions of his zone, six of difference with the escorts Boca Juniors and Talleres de Córdoba, when two dates remain for the end of the qualifying stage.
For its part, Talleres de Córdoba beat Atlético Tucumán 3-2 as a visitor and Arsenal de Sarandí won 1-0 against Defensa y Justicia.
On Saturday, Boca Juniors beat Huracán 2-0, Patronato beat Sarmiento 1-0, while Argentinos Juniors and Banfield drew 1-1 and Unión de Santa Fe and Independiente equalized without goals.
