“Please stay at home”: Young migrants put Biden in trouble

“Please stay at home”
Young migrants cause trouble for Biden

The new US president is softening Trump’s strict rules and allowing underage refugees to cross the border with Texas. The numbers have increased by leaps and bounds since then and Biden has problems with explanations. His spokeswoman calls on migrants to stay in their country. The Republicans cannibalize the issue.

In view of the rapidly increasing number of migrants on the southern border of the USA, the pressure on the administration of the Democratic US President Joe Biden is growing. During a visit to the border in El Paso, Texas, the Supreme Republican in the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, accused Biden of having triggered a dramatic worsening of the situation on the US southern border with his more liberal migration policy. McCarthy spoke of a “Biden border crisis” and called on the President to visit the country personally to get an idea of the situation.

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki again urged migrants from Central America not to make their way to the United States at the moment. She defended the Biden government’s policy of not turning away unaccompanied children at the border on humanitarian grounds. Psaki said the government is taking steps to get unaccompanied minors out of custody by border authorities and into appropriate accommodation as quickly as possible. Psaki made allegations against the administration of Biden’s Republican predecessor Donald Trump. However, she again avoided speaking of a crisis in connection with the situation on the border. “We realize this is a big problem,” said Psaki. “The last government left us with a dismantled and non-functional system.”

Number of minors tripled

Biden came up to ease the restrictive immigration policy of his predecessor. For example, he weakened the regulation issued under Trump, according to which migrants can be expelled immediately because of the corona pandemic. Under Biden, this rule no longer applies to minors. The Republicans see this as the reason for the increase in the number of migrants and accuse Biden of having encouraged illegal immigration.

For the next few days Biden has announced trips within the USA, but so far none to the southern border with Mexico. US media have been reporting for days that the situation on the border is worsening. In the USA, unaccompanied minors must be handed over to the Department of Health by border police at the latest after 72 hours. However, according to consistent reports, this process is currently taking considerably longer. The border protection agency CBP announced last Wednesday that its employees had arrested 100,441 people trying to cross the southern border in February – 28 percent more than in the previous month and almost three times as many as in February of last year. 72,113 migrants were sent back. According to CBP, the number of unaccompanied minors rose from 3,490 in February 2020 to 9,457 last month.
