The Peugeot 208 more accessible is priced close to that of the more equipped versions of most subcompact hatchbacks. Among Mazda2, SEAT Ibiza, KIA Rio, Fiat Argo and Suzuki Swift, we decided to stick with the Sport version of the Japanese hatchback; It has a turbo engine and manual transmission at a price similar to that of Peugeot.

In terms of performance, the Suzuki Swift Sport takes the lead. Its set-up is aimed at a more sporty driving, and its mechanical configuration supports it: it is 38 hp more powerful and generates an additional 19 lb-ft, which cuts the acceleration time to 100 km / h by 3 seconds against Peugeot. The point in favor of the French is in slightly better consumption and, based on our experience at the wheel of 2008, a more comfortable handling in the city.

As to equipment, the main difference is that the Peugeot 208 Active It does not have automatic climate control or smart key, but it does have a rear parking sensor and a tire pressure monitor. Where the French takes a (great) step up is when talking about finishes. While Swift turns to modest plastics, Peugeot aims for rubbery feel and superior quality materials.

The SEAT Ibiza is one of the most direct competitors of the Peugeot 208 in Mexico and in the world. The intermediate version of the French is placed at a price similar to that of the most equipped of the Spanish hatchback, but with a very important difference: the 208 Allure does not offer a manual transmission and the Ibiza FR cannot be configured with an automatic transmission. That could be a deal breaker, regardless of any other argument.

Beyond the transmission, under the hood there are important differences. They both employ a three cylinder turbo engine, and although the Peugeot is considerably more powerful, its acceleration time to 100 km / h is very similar to that of the Ibiza … at least in the specifications announced for Mexico; for some reason, the Ibiza 1.0 TSI with manual gearbox is almost a second faster in our country than in Europe. On a day-to-day basis, we bet that Peugeot will feel more agile, since the Puretech motor better solves the turbolag than the TSI of Volkswagen Group.

Inside, the balance tips in favor of 208 due to the good feel of its materials – the Ibiza uses rigid plastics – and the best-resolved graphics for infotainment and instrument panel. In equipment, however, we declare a tie. The Ibiza adds elements such as a wireless charger or ambient lighting, but Peugeot does include important basic systems, such as a smart key and a backup camera.

Perhaps the most anticipated duel is this. The Peugeot 208 it wants to be a premium alternative, without a “reputable” logo, but with the necessary characteristics to compete in the category. The price of its most equipped version is almost at the level of a Audi A1 and a MINI Cooper in basic versions.

Let’s start with engines, where there are more similarities than differences. The fastest is the MINI Cooper, not only because it is the most powerful – albeit narrowly – but because of its transmission programming. Audi A1 and Peugeot 208 offer similar benefits; the French is more powerful, but the speed of the German S-Tronic box makes up for the difference in power. Of course: like Ibiza, this 1.0 TFSI has a turbolag more marked than that of Peugeot or MINI.

Otherwise, the Peugeot 208 surpasses (by far) its premium competitors. Even at the design level, we will find a much more striking hatchback, with 17 “wheels and claw-shaped LED lighting. MINI and Audi carry 15” wheels and the simplest exterior finishes in their portfolio.

We drive the Audi A1 2020, a hatch that flirts with the premium universe

Inside, at least in terms of quality, Peugeot and MINI offer a similar feel. Where the premiums lag behind is in equipment. Perhaps with Peugeot you do not pay the prestige of a logo with the weight of MINI or Audi, but you do pay for advanced driving assistance, ambient lighting, a panoramic roof, a 10 “screen … and even basic elements that Audi and MINI only offer. as an option: smart key, automatic climate control or cruise control.

The Peugeot 208 points to the top of the hatchbacks

While the configuration of the Active and Allure versions are balanced against the other hatchbacks mainstream, the GT version of the Peugeot 208 ranks well above what you would find in a premium model … or any other hatchback at that price, including the Leon or Mazda3 – with which you gain some space and power, but not equipment-. The Peugeot 208 2022 It is not cheap, but it is worth every penny in a scenario where no other model is this refined, agile, equipped, technological and safe at that price.
