Paraguay, lagging behind in vaccination, receives 234,000 doses of Covax and India

Asunción, Apr 25 (EFE) .- Paraguay received this Sunday a total of 234,000 vaccines, part of the Covax mechanism and another of the cooperation of India, on the day in which the South American country registered its highest daily number of deaths from the Covid, a total of 98 that bring the deceased to 5,900 in a year.

Of these vaccines, all arrivals at the Asunción international airport, 134,000 correspond to the Astrazeneca from the Covax platform, part of a batch of 4.3 million of which only 36,000 doses arrived on March 19.

The other load is 100,000 Covaxin donated by India, half of the arrivals weeks ago.

The authorities gathered at the airport told the media that the remittances will represent a considerable advance in the vaccination campaign, which at the moment is limited to white personnel and the elderly.

In fact, the government itself had expressed discomfort with the Covax body, which was its main bet on vaccines, given the slowness of these deliveries.

The arrival of vaccines occurs with the country, of seven million inhabitants, going through its maximum spikes in infections and overflowing the capacity of the public health network.

This prompted the Conservative Executive Mario Abdo Benítez to decree this Saturday a quarantine with restrictions on mobility that will begin on Tuesday and end on May 10, without ruling out extending it.

The figures of the Ministry of Health this Sunday reported, in addition to the almost one hundred deaths, 3,027 hospitalized, of which 514 are in intensive care, while the positives were 1,786, according to the Ministry of Health.

The report indicates that there are 219,647 recovered and 267,082 accumulated positives since the first cases were detected in March 2020.

As for the restrictions as of Tuesday, the Government reported this morning that it will deploy police and military personnel to enforce the measures.

The most obvious is the prohibition of driving between night and early morning and according to schedules adjusted to the health classification, arranged by zones according to the degree of community transmission.

The measures only allow circulation in the strip between five in the morning and eight in the afternoon in the localities cataloged in the red level, except for essential activities.

It is about fifty cities that include Asunción, the capital, and Ciudad del Este, the second largest city in the country, and others in the Central department, the most populated and focus of the pandemic.

In the rest it will be possible to circulate from five in the morning to midnight.
