Walleged links to terrorist organizations, the Turkish authorities arrested 267 suspects in raids in 33 cities and provinces. 161 of them are foreign nationals, the state news agency Anadolu reported on Saturday. The police assume that the alleged religious extremists were planning attacks on New Year’s Eve. The suspects were arrested during raids between December 20 and 31, Anadolu wrote, citing a communication from the Interior Ministry. At first there was no further information.
Another 69 foreign nationals were detained in a separate case by the Turkish immigration authorities for alleged “links to conflict areas,” the report said. Police seized weapons, explosives and digital documents linked to terrorist groups during raids. No further details were given.
Turkey regularly takes action against alleged members of the terrorist militia “Islamic State” (IS). The IS has claimed several attacks in Turkey in recent years, including the attack on the Reina nightclub in Istanbul on New Year’s Eve 2016/2017. 39 people were shot at that time.
