Two young people in Australia have to answer for a fatal attack on 14 kangaroos. The two 17-year-olds are charged with ruthless beating and killing of the animals and will have to face a trial in a juvenile court at the end of November, the police said.
The dead giant kangaroos, including two young, were discovered over the weekend in two different locations near the coastal town of Batemans Bay in the south-east of the country.
The animal welfare organization Wires condemned the act as a “tragic and senseless act” that left heavy marks on the volunteers on site and the residents.
► A baby kangaroo survived the attack. “When she got here, she was as good as dead,” said Wires representative Janelle Renes to ABC television about the little female. In the meantime, however, she is “surprisingly incredibly good”.
Eastern gray kangaroos are native to the east and south of Australia. The males are up to 1.60 meters tall and weigh up to 60 kilograms.
