Steindorf am Ossiacher See – Terrible accident in Austria: In Steindorf am Ossiacher See (state of Carinthia) a German vacationer has apparently found a relic of the World War. When handling it, there was an explosion, and the 59-year-old died!
According to the police, the man is said to have made the find on Thursday in the bathing lake. It was probably a grenade, reports the Austrian newspaper “Kurier”. On Friday morning he went to the lake again at around 11 a.m., presumably to examine the object more closely – and blew himself to his death!
The exact circumstances are now under investigation. According to “delivery man“The German could have stayed at the lake to fish. A spokesman for the Carinthian police told BILD: “The man stood in the water during the explosion.”
It is not uncommon for ammunition to be discovered in the lake, the spokesman added. In the Ossiacher See remains from the world wars can be found “enough”, mostly from the 2nd World War.
It is not yet known which part of Germany the holidaymaker comes from. The German embassy will be kept up-to-date in order to notify the 59-year-old’s relatives, said the police spokesman.
