The governor of Texas has announced the opening of all shops and an end to the mask requirement in the US state. President Biden promises to have enough vaccine for all adults by the end of May.
The US state of Texas is lifting its corona restrictions as far as possible. Republican Governor Greg Abbott published a decree on Tuesday that abolishes masking requirements. All companies and institutions should run their operations back to 100 percent. The cancellation of the previous corona restrictions will take effect on Wednesday next week.
“Too many small business owners struggle to keep their bills,” Abbott said. “This has to end. The time has come to open Texas to 100 percent.”
“With medical advances in vaccinations and antibody therapies, Texas now has the tools to protect Texans from the virus,” said the conservative governor. Covid-19 was not “gone”; state requirements are no longer “necessary”. Everyone must live up to their responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others.
Wearing a protective mask is still recommended
Shops and restaurants can therefore continue to limit the number of customers. The wearing of protective masks is still recommended, but no longer compulsory. In addition, individual districts can impose new restrictions if the number of hospital patients increases significantly.
The number of new infections in the USA has recently decreased significantly. The health authorities warn against a hasty relaxation of the corona restrictions, especially because of the risk of new virus variants. In the USA, more than 515,000 people have died as a result of a corona infection – by far the highest number in the world.
Biden: Sufficient vaccine for all adults by the end of May
At the same time, the vaccination campaign is making great strides. President Joe Biden said Tuesday the U.S. should have enough coronavirus vaccines by the end of May to vaccinate all of the country’s adult citizens. In mid-February, Biden had named the end of July as the time horizon.
In the United States, more than 51.7 million people have received at least one dose of vaccine. This corresponds to 15.6 percent of the total population and around 20 percent of the adult population.
The third vaccine to be approved in the USA was the vaccine from the pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson. As Biden said on Tuesday, Johnson & Johnson is getting support from competitor Merck to produce the vaccine. This is intended to accelerate production and filling.
In a statement at the White House, Biden urged caution. “The fight is far from over,” said President. US citizens are not allowed to take their cover off.
