North Korea admits testing of “tactical guided projectile”

According to the state news agency KCNA, North Korea announced a double test of a newly developed “tactical guided projectile” on Thursday. The state media spread pictures on Friday that apparently showed the launch of a rocket painted in black and white. The weapons would have hit a target within 600 kilometers, KCNA reported.

They are based on existing technology and could each transport a warhead of 2.5 tons. North Korea had already tested missiles a few days earlier.

US President Joe Biden stated at his first formal press conference on Thursday that North Korea had violated UN requirements by testing ballistic missiles. The US was discussing how to proceed with its allies and would take action if the country allowed the situation to escalate. Biden had also set North Korea as the main foreign policy issue. The USA is ready to try to denuclearize the communist state through diplomatic channels.

The UN Security Council’s Sanctions Committee for North Korea is due to meet on Friday for deliberations.

Words of warning also come from Berlin

The federal government also condemned the missile test. “North Korea is thus again violating relevant resolutions of the Security Council and is irresponsibly endangering regional security,” said a spokeswoman for the Foreign Office in Berlin. “We call on North Korea to refrain from further tests and to immediately accept talks from the United States and South Korea. North Korea remains committed to the complete, irreversible and verifiable termination of its weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile development programs. “

South Korea and Japan also expressed concern. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called for new negotiations on the peace process on the Korean peninsula. UN resolutions prohibit North Korea from testing ballistic missiles, which, depending on their design, can also carry a nuclear warhead.
