New Year’s Eve riots in France and Vienna: Chaots infected a police car – news abroad

Violent rioting, firecrackers and stones thrown at officials, a burning police car – in Vienna as well as in the French city of Lieuron there were serious New Year’s Eve riots.

► 2500 people met for an illegal techno party in Lieuron in western France. The participants came from different regions of France and from abroad, announced the prefecture of the Ille-et-Vilaine département in Brittany.

When the police tried to break up the party, the revelers went nuts. Party guests threw stones and bottles at officials, and some security guards were injured. One police car was set on fire and three others were badly damaged.

In a video shared on social networks, the burning police car can be seen, and some of the angry people shout “Happy New Year!”

The dissolution of the party failed: on Friday morning, a lot of ravers were dancing to techno music, as a journalist from the AFP news agency observed. Security guards distributed disinfectant gel and masks.

The public prosecutor’s office started an investigation.

► There were also serious riots in Vienna. When police officers marched out for property damage in the Favoriten district, they were attacked by rioters with fireworks.

Several people had damaged garbage cans, newspaper racks and window panes with fireworks. A video shows a man trying to break the window of a jewelry store with a heavy piece of metal. One of the chaotic explosives tears apart a trash can.

After the attack on the officers, the perpetrators ran away, but the police found nine people between the ages of 14 and 29, it said. They are accused of serious damage to property. A 21-year-old was also investigated for attempted break-in. He remained in custody for the time being.
