The romance between motorsport and the screen will have a new chapter, as Netflix announced that the 23XI NASCAR team, of which Michael Jordan is co-owner, will be the subject of a new series. The release date will be announced later.
According to a promotion on Nascar’s website, the series “will take viewers behind the scenes of the 2021 NASCAR season through the eyes of Bubba Wallace (the driver).” From that description, something similar to what Drive to Survive offers is derived, although in that case it addresses all the Formula 1 teams and in this case they will be focused only on the 23XI NASCAR.
It should be remembered that Bubba Wallace is the only black driver currently competing full time in the NASCAR Cup, a racer who has not been without controversy off the track.
Last year the racial protests were at a high point over the police murder of George Floyd. Wallace was strongly showing his stance against racial inequality and suffered a controversial situation when a rope was found in his garage. NASCAR initially called the incident “an infamous act,” although subsequent investigation would resolve that the rope had been in place for a couple of months.
In sports, Wallace previously drove for Richard Petty Motorsports, but signed with 23XI Racing when the new team was announced last September.
The team is co-owned by Michael Jordan and driver Denny Hamlin, who continues to drive for Joe Gibbs Racing and currently leads the overall rankings.
In terms of results, the 23XI NASCAR team is entering a first season without great achievements, with Bubba Wallace in twentieth position. On the last day at Talladega he finished 19th.
For Nascar it will be his second collaboration with Netflix, after the premiere of “The Crew”, a comedy starring Kevin James that premiered earlier this year, thus adding to the television options that fans will find on the streaming platform.
Michael Jordan, meanwhile, will have a second approach to Netflix after the enormous success of “The Last Dance”, the series that shows the year in which he won the last championship with the Chicago Bulls. By the way, it opens the option to a new business adventure for Jordan, one of the many and which has delivered such good dividends to the greatest basketball player in history.
