Mysterious Twitter bug: mention Memphis and your account is banned

Twitter users who mentioned the name of the city of Memphis on Sunday had to expect surprising consequences: Some accounts were then blocked for twelve hours. Twitter spoke on Monday night of a bug that has since been fixed. There was initially no explanation of how this came about.

The problem was noticed by fans of the Memphis Grizzlies basketball team – as well as users who mentioned the name of the football player Memphis Depay. After information about the software error spread on the Internet, many users tweeted the word “Memphis” and immediately received an email from Twitter that they had violated the terms of use.
