More than 100 arrests! – Raid against the most powerful mafia in Italy

Heavy blow to the ‘Ndrangheta!

Italian police arrested more than 100 members of the country’s most powerful mafia in raids on Tuesday. In Milan, Florence and Calabria – the home of the ‘Ndranghenta – the officers searched several apartments. “One of the toughest organizations in Europe was dismantled,” said the Calabrian police chief Bruno Megale triumphantly. The raid was preceded by intensive observation of the mafiosi.

The arrested belong to the Mole clan, a sub-group of the ‘Ndrangheta. They are charged with extortion, illegally possessing and carrying weapons, laundering money, forming a criminal organization with the aim of drug trafficking, usury, fraudulent bankruptcy, tax fraud and corruption. The mafiosi had “enforced the rules of ‘Ndrangheta in various areas of the economy,” Megale said.

According to the investigators’ findings, the Mole clan employed a diver specifically to recover the drug if it was thrown overboard before arriving at the port. At the head of the clan is the 26-year-old Rocco Mole, as the deputy prosecutor Gaetano Paci said. Rocco, whose father is serving a life sentence, has taken the reins.

According to the daily newspaper “Gazzetta del Sud”, Rocco Mole took part in a project for three years as a minor to help children of Mafia families to break away from the clan. After the murder of his uncle by a rival clan, however, he returned to his family, reported the local newspaper “CNews24”.

The ‘Ndrangheta comes from the region at the top of the Italian boot. It smuggles cocaine into Europe and is said to have around 20,000 members worldwide. The ‘Ndrangheta has now outstripped the infamous Sicilian Cosa Nostra and is considered the most powerful mafia group in Italy.
