And is that the successor to the current Mercedes-AMG C 63 It will abandon its V8 mechanics in favor of a new four-cylinder. A 2.0-liter engine that thanks to the adoption of an innovative electric turbocharger with technology that comes directly from Formula 1, it will develop a maximum power of more than 450 hp. This turbo, called MGU-H (acronym for Motor Generator Unit Heat) is also used in the brutal Mercedes-AMG Project ONE.

More than 450 hp with technology inherited from Formula 1

The turbocompresor MGU-H, manufactured by Garrett, has the peculiarity that it integrates a small electric motor on the turbine shaft with a power of 6 kW. It is powered by the 400 volt on-board electrical network and is capable of reaching a maximum speed of no less than 156.000 rpm. Thanks to this small engine, it is possible to accelerate the turbine before the exhaust gases take over that task, achieving an instantaneous response almost from idle.

And if all this seemed little to you, this 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine will work with the support of a hybrid system that will produce up to 204 hp additional power. In this way, the performance of the future successor to the current Mercedes-AMG C 63 with four-cylinder engine will outperform the current 4.0-liter biturbo V8 by far. So much so that the advertised combined maximum power will exceed 643 CV (480 kW). Another peculiarity of the new 2.0-liter block is that it will have a starter / generator with 10 kW of power.

The aforementioned M139 block serves as the basis for this new engine. In the future, C 63 for the first time will go from being placed in a forward-transverse position (as in the A 45, CLA 45 and company) to front-longitudinal position. Depending on the brand, the use of this engine will also allow for improved agility and a higher level of efficiency.

There are other novelties that can be seen in the photos that accompany this article, provided by the brand itself. As for example, the fact that the successor to the C 63 will have a system of 4Matic + all-wheel drive. A logical move, especially if we look at what its most direct competition, BMW, has done. And a decision that is in line with what has happened with his older brothers.

One last clarification. Surely someone thinks that the current M139 is not the most powerful four-cylinder in the world mentioning the one that was equipped with cars like the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ-440 MR. But it must be clear that this Japanese model was not officially built by Mitsubishi if not by one of its subsidiaries, specifically that of the United Kingdom.

It was more a preparation with an official guarantee than anything else and to that we must add the fact that only 40 units were manufactured. A figure too low to be considered a series production engine, not like the M139, of which tens of thousands of units are produced per year.
