Mass panic broke out at the funeral services for the late Tanzanian President Magufuli – 45 people died. Magufuli was one of the most famous corona deniers in Africa.

At the funeral services for the late Tanzanian President John Magufuli there was a mass panic with 45 dead. Some people climbed a wall in Dar es Salaam last week to catch a glimpse of Magufuli’s body laid out in a stadium, said city police chief Lazaro Mambosasa. But the wall collapsed, which resulted in a deadly mass panic.

Magufuli was buried with a state funeral in his hometown of Chato last week. The government announced on March 17 that Magufuli had died of heart failure. For opposition leaders, however, it is taken for granted that he has succumbed to the consequences of a corona infection.

Magufuli was a well-known corona denier

Magufuli was considered one of the most famous corona deniers in Africa. He rejected distance rules, recommended herbs and exercise against Covid-19 and said last year that Tanzania had overcome the pandemic with three days of national prayer. Magufuli questioned the effect of corona tests and vaccines.

He had not been seen in public since February 27, fueling rumors of serious Covid-19 disease. In Tanzania, Magufuli was revered by many for his combative manner and his anti-corruption campaign, even when opponents accused him of using suppressive methods in addition to his corona skepticism.

He was succeeded by Samia Suluhu Hassan, who had previously served as his vice-president. She is Tanzania’s first head of state. On Tuesday she nominated Treasury Secretary Philip Mpango for the office of Vice President. Parliament unanimously gave the go-ahead for the personnel.
