In Mol, Belgium, at the beginning of December, at least 26 residents of a retirement home have died as a result of a coronavirus infection after a visit by a Nicholas actor. This was announced by the spokesman for the responsible health authority, Joris Moonens.
Corona infection detected in Nikolaus
After visiting the home in the province of Antwerp, a corona infection was found in the actor who played Nicholas. Later, infections with the same strain of virus were discovered among residents and staff in the facility with 179 old people, Moonens said. The Belga news agency reported 85 positive corona tests among residents and 40 more among staff.
Health Authority: “Event was not a good idea”
Moonens said, however, that it would probably never be clear whether the Nikolaus actor really infected the people or whether he got the infection there. According to the spokesman, it is also unclear whether the general hygiene rules were observed at the event. There are different representations and the research is still ongoing.
But: “Everyone agrees that it was not a good idea to organize such an event at such a difficult time,” said Moonens.
