* The number of people who applied for state unemployment benefits in the United States last week stood at 719,000, higher than expected, according to the United States Department of Labor. * The prior week’s figure was revised down to 658,000 from a previous estimate of 684,000. * Economists polled by Reuters expected the requests to be at 680,000. * The moving average of new applications for the last four weeks, which is considered a more reliable indication of trends in the labor market as it reduces volatility peaks, fell to 719,000. * The report also showed that the number of people who were receiving public aid after an initial week of subsidies fell to 3.794 million.
