Loeb explains in detail Elena’s separation

Sébastien Loeb detailed the reasons and inertias that led him to fire his co-driver, Daniel Elena, after 23 years competing and winning together.

The Sébastien Loeb-Daniel Elena breakup continues to leave some sequels 10 days after its announcement. On this occasion, it was the Alsatian rider who showed his face to explain with hairs and signs the reasons that led him to dispense with the co-driver with whom he won the World Rally Championship nine times.

Loeb, 47, contested his fifth Dakar last January, in the first edition of the team Bahrain Raid Xtreme, managed by Prodrive, with Nani Roma as a partner. But the hardships began too soon for him and his longtime co-pilot, Daniel Elena.

Both incurred a penalty in stage 4 for exceeding the speed limits in an area controlled by radar, something that generally the co-driver must warn and that is indicated with beeps through the instrumentation that the Dakar organization installs in each car.

And from the next day, stage 5, everything went downhill for the couple: getting lost next to Carlos Sainz that day, clicking many times and eventually having to spend 9 hours in the middle of the desert in stage 6. His abandonment finally occurred two days later, after having suffered several damage to his BRX T1 4×4 in the marathon stage.

“We lost a lot of time in navigation. As for the driving, there are some things that I have to study and that we have to understand, because we had a lot of punctures,” Loeb reflected, first of all, about his problems in the Dakar 2021, in an interview with the french newspaper The Latest News from Alsace.

“Prodrive is making all possible efforts and will try to solve any organizational, technical and other problems. As far as I know, I am responsible for my car, and I think I have to make an effort to try to optimize the way in which my team work with him. “

“It was a complicated decision, but one of those necessary ones. It was a sports issue, a performance issue. I was convinced that I had to do it. However, doing it and announcing it was something that was extremely difficult. Having to do it and tell Daniel, my friend. … telling him that I wanted to turn the page was a tough decision. Maybe I didn’t do it in the best possible way. For me, he’s a friend and I talked to him openly, as anyone would among friends, and maybe he doesn’t use the right ways and sorry for that, “reasoned the French driver aloud.

“But I think I had to go through it, give myself some fresh air, try something different, try to get out of this comfort zone, discover new things. Maybe get the help of someone professional in the discipline, who will accompany me and help me. to improve, because I know that I still have things to learn. Currently, we were a WRC couple and we got into a completely different system and I think it was not enough. “

Loeb makes it clear that Elena tried to adapt to the raids in the best possible way, in fact they were able to win 14 etapas of the Dakar from 2016 to 2019, when with the cars of Peugeot (the last year privately within PH Sport).

“He [Elena], managed to reduce the difference thanks to the hard work of recent years. But now the navigation has become so hard that I think you need a professional in this discipline to deal with it “, says Loeb about the changes in philosophy of the last edition.

“I think we were a bit lucky to get into the raids at a time when the Dakar was a bit, according to the specialists, WRC style. It suited us very well because we could make a difference on the tracks and the navigation was less complicated. than it is now. “

When asked about the criticism of many fans in recent days through social networks, after positioning himself in favor of Elena, Loeb made it clear that they affect him.

“Obviously criticism affects me, I’m not used to it. Generally, I have good press and in some way it is something important to me, because I like to bring joy to people and it is better that they see you in a positive way than negative. I understand that a lot of people defend Daniel, because he was put in a victim situation. I think many people misinterpreted the reasons why we made the decision, because the information that came out was not really correct, “he concluded.
