LG officially announced today that its mobile division will be closed, something that it has already been evaluating. Software updates and support for existing LG smartphone owners will continue for a “period of time”. Following this “strategic decision” approved by the board of directors today, the company will focus on electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart homes, robotics, artificial intelligence and business-to-business solutions.
That said, LG will continue to develop “mobility-related technologies”, promoted 6G networks as they claim in their press release. They also say that “details related to your workforce will be determined locally.” LG expects to complete the closure of its mobile division before July 31.
Core technologies developed during LG’s two decades of mobile business operations will also be preserved and applied to existing and future products.
Existing mobile inventory will remain “available for sale,” while phone owners will continue to receive support and software updates for an “unspecified period of time that will vary by region.” LG will work in collaboration with vendors and business partners during the closing of the mobile phone business. It’s unclear how the Android 11 release will be affected.
Unsurprisingly, the rollable LG phone is unlikely to see the light of day, and the strangely shaped LG Wing will be the company’s last major flagship. LG in its long history in the mobile market, tried to push a series of concepts that include curves, modularity with the G5, high-end audio and dual-screen cases.
