HOUSTON – José Altuve had three hits and two RBIs on his return after testing positive for the coronavirus, and the Houston Astros beat the Seattle Mariners 5-2 on Monday night.
Cubans Yordan Álvarez and Yuli Gurriel each had three hits and produced touchdowns for Houston, which added its fourth win in five games after a three-game losing streak.
Mexico’s José Urquidy (1-2) allowed five hits and two plate appearances in six innings for his first win of the season. Ryan Pressly allowed a hit in a scoreless ninth for his second save.
Kyle Lewis and Kyle Seager hit solo home runs for the Mariners, who blew four chances with running backs in scoring position and conceded their second straight loss. Seattle prevailed at home in two of its three clashes with the Astros when they had five casualties, including that of Venezuelan Altuve, Álvarez and Alex Bregman, due to security protocols against the coronavirus.
Mariners starter Justus Sheffield (1-2) took the loss after conceding 12 hits, the worst record of his career, and five runs, four of them earned, in 5 1/3 innings.
