Because they have long known that they have to help themselves instead of waiting for help from politics, people from the particularly hard-hit Ahr Valley have come together and built the village out of the ground.

With a campsite, food counter, laundry, its own blacksmith and the BaumAHRkt – a play on words with Ahrweiler. And a shuttle service with 50 buses that brings helpers to where they are particularly needed. Over 2000 volunteers were in the camp at the weekend – there are fewer during the week, many have to work.

► Like Ines (53), who says: “There’s not much going on in the swimming pool, where I usually work. That’s why I cook delicious lentil soup here. “

► Anke (56) from Mutterstadt hands out work clothes: “It was a matter of course for me that I would help here.”

► Farrier Michael Rosenfeldt (41) takes care of the tools: “All the chisels that are used and worn down in the valley, we work here every evening.”
