German Weather Service – Again heavy rain on the weekend

After the devastating rainfalls last week, meteorologists expect heavy rain again in North Rhine-Westphalia for the weekend. A meteorologist from the German Weather Service (DWD) said on Wednesday. However, there is “no comparison to what happened last week”.

Last week there was continuous rain for a longer period of time, in this situation there was then additional heavy rain – this does not usually occur together.

The announced heavy rain on the weekend is much more regional and will not be accompanied by continuous rain.

▶ ︎ Local thunderstorms and heavy rain can be expected on Saturday afternoon and evening. It is still too early for a precise classification of the main areas of precipitation, “but the German model chain in particular, with all the uncertainties in the area around the Eifel, indicates heavy rain again,” according to the DWD’s assessment. Even on Sunday and Monday, the weather should remain inconsistent and changeable.

In the flood areas in North Rhine-Westphalia, the soils are currently still above average, said Bernd Mehlig, flood expert at the State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection North Rhine-Westphalia (LANUV). “Of course they don’t take in as much water as if it had been dry for a few weeks.” The seepage capacity is lower.

According to Mehlig, it is difficult to predict whether the heavy rain will also be more difficult to absorb. That is “regionally and locally very different” and depends, among other things, on the amount of precipitation, the soil structure and the vegetation.

In the past few days, the district of Düren received calls from concerned and insecure citizens about the weather forecast for the weekend. “The water association has created storage space again in Urft and Rurtalsperre so that the precipitation to be expected on the weekend after the current warnings can be absorbed,” said the district of Düren on Wednesday. “In addition, the soil is starting to dry again and can already absorb some of the water again.”
