It is a terrible sight to see visitors to the cemetery in Fontainebleau, France. Countless of the tombstones were smeared – with Nazi symbols.
Swastikas were emblazoned on the resting places of the deceased, sprayed by strangers. The mayor of the city posted photos of the cemetery on Twitter and expressed his dismay.
Unknown people smear gravestones with swastikas
Mayor Frédéric Valletoux wrote on Twitter on Monday that he was “outraged and disgusted”. The cemetery has never been the target of such crimes before.
According to media reports, almost 70 graves in the main cemetery have been smeared. The families affected should now be notified as soon as possible and the tombstones should then be cleaned.
Valletoux announced to the intelligence service that he would file a complaint and take action against the unknown. (Mei)
