For 46 years she has been Joe Biden’s (78) woman’s side. But before that, Jill Biden (69) was married once. In a TV interview, she now talked about how it was back then, with the divorce.
From 1970 to 1975, Jill Biden was married to college football player Bill Stevenson. Today’s First Lady has invited the presenter and singer Kelly Clarkson (38, recently divorced) to her “NBC” talk show in the White House. And Biden found comforting words in the women’s talk.
About her own divorce, she said, “I’m looking back at it now and I think, you know, if I hadn’t gotten a divorce, I would never have met Joe.”
And: “I wouldn’t have the magical family that I have now. So I really think things are done for the best and I think, Kelly, in time (…) you heal. And you will be surprised and I can’t wait until that day comes for you. “
Kelly Clarkson had spoken about the pain of their public separation in other interviews. She filed for divorce from Brandon Blackstock, 44, last year after they were both married for nearly seven years. They have two children together.
Jill Biden also quoted her own mother’s advice in the “NBC” interview. “My mother used to tell me things would be better tomorrow,” says Jill Biden. So she wanted to encourage Clarkson to “take one day at a time and things will get better.”
Smiling, Jill Biden added, “Kelly, one day you will call me and say, Hey Jill, you were right!”
The love story of Jill and Joe Biden
It was March 1975. A blind date organized by Joe’s brother Frank. Jill Biden was then studying at the University of Pennsylvania. Joe Biden was already a Senator for Delaware. Two and a half years earlier, he lost his wife and daughter in a traffic accident.
Jill Biden once admitted in a “Vogue” interview that Joe wasn’t exactly her type at first glance. “I’d always dated men who wore jeans, t-shirts, and clogs.” Joe Biden had a different style. “He came to the door wearing a sports coat and slippers and I thought, ‘God, this will never work, not in a million years.’ He was nine years older than me! “
Still, she went out with him.
“We saw ‘A Man and a Woman’ at the Philadelphia movie theater and we were instantly hooked. When we got home, he shook my hand in parting. I went upstairs and called my mom at 1am and said, ‘Mom, I’ve finally met a gentleman.’ “
Two months later, the divorce from her then-husband was through.
The prospective teacher got on really well with Joe Biden’s sons, who were still children. But marrying the kids’ dad? After her first failed marriage, she pushed the thought far away from herself. Joe made five marriage proposals to her until she finally said YES!
“By then, of course, I was in love with the boys, and I really felt this marriage had to work,” said Jill Biden. “Because they had lost their mother and I couldn’t allow them to lose another mother. So I had to be 100 percent sure. “
On June 17, 1977, Jill and Joe Biden tied the knot in New York City. In 1981 their daughter Ashley was born. Joe and Jill Biden now have seven grandchildren – and they still have a scandal-free, happy marriage.
