Corona vaccinations are making rapid progress in the USA. There should be relief for vaccinated people. You can meet people inside without a mask or distance – regardless of whether they are vaccinated or not.
According to the new recommendations of the CDC health authority, Americans who have already received both corona vaccinations can easily meet other vaccinated people in small private groups in closed rooms. You don’t have to wear a mask or keep your distance. You can also meet people who have not been vaccinated, provided they come from a household and do not belong to the risk group.
In addition, fully vaccinated people in the USA do not have to adhere to quarantine or take a corona test if they have come into contact with a Covid-19 patient.
Fully vaccinated is anyone who received either the second Pfizer / Biontech or Moderna vaccination or the one-time vaccination from the pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson at least two weeks ago.
Further strict rules in public
For many vaccinated grandparents in the US, these new rules mean that for the first time in around a year they can see and hug their children and grandchildren without a mask.
However, strict guidelines should continue to be observed in public. Experts do not see the all-clear for a long time. CDC director Rochelle Walensky emphasized that outside of closed rooms it is still strongly recommended that everyone wear a mask, keep their distance and avoid large crowds. Travel that is not absolutely necessary should also be avoided.
So far 59 million people have been vaccinated
According to the CDC, around 59 million people in the US have received at least one dose of vaccine so far, and around 31 million have already received two doses. The United States has a population of approximately 330 million.
Andy Slavitt, senior corona advisor from the White House, said that an average of 2.2 million doses had been administered recently. On Saturday it was even 2.9 million – the highest daily value so far. Walensky said the new recommendations are an “important first step”. With the vaccination program, the recommendations should be gradually adapted. The situation is still “very serious”. Given the progress in vaccinations, the country is beginning to come over the mountain.
The United States is the country that has been hit hardest by the pandemic in absolute terms. Since it began a year ago, more than half a million people have died with or from the virus, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University. More than 29 million have been infected so far. For some time now, the number of infections has been falling significantly.
Address to the nation
New President Joe Biden has made fighting the pandemic his primary goal. White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki announced a speech to the nation on Thursday evening.
Among other things, Biden will talk about the sacrifices the Americans made in the course of the pandemic year and the losses they had to cope with. He has promised that enough vaccine will be available for every US citizen by the end of May.
