A fierce fire It started this afternoon around 3 p.m. at the a plastic factory in El Talar, in General Pacheco, Tigre district, with flames that reached several meters in height and a cord of smoke that could be seen from many points of the city of Buenos Aires and the suburbs.
The Cabelma plant covers 10,000 square meters with highly flammable materials. Around 50 firefighters from Tigre, General Pacheco, Benavídez, Don Torcuato and San Isidro are working there, trying to contain the fire, but the wind is fueling the fire at high speed.
The head of the General Pacheco fire station, José Cornejo, told the Télam news agency: “This fire is very violent and until now we have not been able to contain it due to the combustible material found inside the factory.” And he assured: “Fortunately, we were already able to avoid the danger of it spreading to neighboring houses and we had no more affected personnel.”
In addition, it indicated that “the smoke is slightly toxic” and that several firefighters were affected by heat stroke due to the high temperatures and had to be transferred.
The head of the barracks said that the fire “is not yet under control”, so they will continue “to work with hydraulic lifts from various fronts” and estimated that only “in the early hours of tomorrow” will they be able to put out the fire.
Fierce fire in a factory warehouse
The residents evacuated themselves from the surroundings of the factory, located in Arévalos 3435, of General Pacheco, which is dedicated to the manufacture of plastic boxes for bottles and baskets, among other elements.
According to some neighbors, the fire was started by the burning of grasslands at one of the factory gates, a hypothesis that the Police are investigating. Meanwhile, Cornejo added: “The fire started in a disused warehouse and then took over the entire company, so the destruction is total.”
