Fake millionaire – Anna Sorokin is released from US jail thanks to Netflix

Anna Sorokin (30) is a convicted impostor from Germany who made a “career” in the USA: She dined in starred restaurants, lived in luxury hotels, and jetted around the world with the rich and famous of New York society. The daughter of a truck driver from North Rhine-Westphalia had sneaked money from wealthy friends and banks for years.

The fake millionaire was arrested in the USA and sentenced to four years in prison in 2019, then initially released, then arrested again – because of an expired visa. Now she is to be finally released from custody.

As the broadcaster RTL reports, the impostor is to be released on bail from the custody of the US immigration authorities ICE. The lawyer for the 30-year-old explained that. Sorokin should be allowed to stay in the US for the time being. The amount of the deposit is unclear. According to the report, the fraudster will appear again in the coming days before an immigration judge.

For years, the German Anna Sorokin from Eschweiler in the Rhineland (North Rhine-Westphalia) pretended the New York Society to be rich. Netflix has secured the rights to her story, star producer Shonda Rhimes (“Grey’s Anatomy”) is to tell the experiences of the impostor in a series entitled “Inventing Anna”. Thanks to the streaming provider, Sorokin was even able to pay off her debts: Netflix transferred her $ 320,000 (263,841 euros).
