Mexico begins 2021 with more than 11 thousand infections by COVID-19

The Mexican government reported on the first day of the year 11,091 new cases of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and 700 deaths from covid-19, reaching a total of 1,437,185 infections and 126,507 deaths. These figures imply an incidence rate of 1,124.6 accumulated infections per 100,000 inhabitants, the Ministry of Health (SSa) indicated this Friday in its daily technical statement.

With this outlook, Mexico begins 2021 as the fourth country in the world with the most deaths from the pandemic, only below the United States, Brazil and India, according to the Johns Hopkins University count. In addition, according to this same institution, Mexico is the thirteenth country in the world in terms of number of infections.

The country also occupies the thirteenth position in deaths in proportion to its population, having more than 900 per million inhabitants. By state, Mexico City concentrates almost a quarter of the total accumulated cases, 23% of the total, said the SSa. The country’s capital also accounts for almost one in five deaths from covid-19, the agency detailed.

The Ministry of Health has recognized that Mexico is experiencing “a second peak” of the pandemic due to the winter season, as reflected in hospital saturation. At the national level, Mexico City is in a risk zone with 87% of its general beds occupied, the State of Mexico with 82%, Guanajuato with 73% and Nuevo León with 71%. In beds with a fan or intensive, the State of Mexico leads with 81% occupancy and then Mexico City with 79%.
