The Forbes list surprised again. The group segment of the richest people in the world, despite the pandemic, saw its size grow in the last year like never before, including 493 new members; that is, there was practically a new billionaire every 17 hours.
The list of the super-rich was headed for the fourth consecutive year by Jeff Bezos, with an estimated fortune of US $ 177 billion, a figure that had an increase of “just” US $ 64 billion compared to last year, thanks to the good performance of Amazon shares.
But this year the big winner was Elon Musk. The founder of Tesla made the biggest jump in the exclusive group, going from 31st place, with an estimated fortune of US $ 24.6 billion, to the second position, thanks to a fortune of US $ 151 billion. Forbes explains the huge jump due to the 705% rise in Tesla shares.
In third place was the Frenchman Bernard Arnault, who practically doubled his fortune from US $ 76 billion to US $ 150 billion, thanks to the 86% increase in the value of the shares of LVMH, owner of brands such as Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior.
In fourth place was Bill Gates with an estimated fortune of US $ 124 billion and in fifth position the founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, with a fortune estimated at US $ 97 billion, almost double that of last year.
On the new listing, Forbes president of content Randall Lane noted in an interview with Reuters Video News that “the very, very rich got much, much richer.”
Among the reasons for the increase in the number of millionaires and the existing fortunes, the prestigious media commented that there is the rise of cryptocurrencies, the rise of companies with space purposes and of companies related to health.
