According to various Italian media, the contagion of the 2006 world champion in Germany, who had just joined the national team as Roberto Mancini’s field assistant, occurred last week along with three other members of the Azzurra squad, who had just participated on the triple round of UEFA Qualifiers en route to the Qatar World Cup in 2022 in matches against Northern Ireland, Bulgaria and Lithuania.

The 37-year-old ex-player manifested some breathing problems on Thursday and, at night, he was hospitalized. In principle, the diagnosis would indicate a pneumonia that is also controlled.

A total of eight Italian footballers were infected with COVID-19 in the last week: Matteo Pessina, Leonardo Bonucci, Alessandro Florenzi, Federico Bernardeschi, Marco Verratti, Vincenzo Grifo, Alessio Cragno and Salvatore Sirigu. About 20 members of the Azzurra delegation made up of 80 people contracted the disease.

After retiring from football last year at the end of his time at Boca Juniors, De Rossi decided to start a coaching career and, while waiting to get the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) coach card, he joined the collaborators de Mancini with his sights set on the start of the qualifying phase to Qatar 2022 and the European Championship next June.

After being introduced as a reinforcement to Italy’s coaching staff last month, De Rossi had said: “I am proud to start this new career with the national team and I thank both President Gravina and manager Mancini for the confidence and opportunity. It will be exciting to go back to Coverciano (training camp), which for me means going home and finding a lot of former teammates and friends on the squad and in the group. I can’t wait to start ”.

The Italian National Team won its first three appearances and settled into Group C of the Playoffs heading to the World Cup next year. Their next matches will be in September: Thursday 2/9 against Bulgaria, Sunday 5/9 against Switzerland and Wednesday 8/9 against Lithuania. Before (in June) he will face the Eurocup, in which he integrates Group A together with Turkey, Wales and Switzerland (all his presentations will be in Rome).

De Rossi, born in 1983, spent almost all of his career at Roma, from which he inherited the captain’s armband after the retirement of Francesco Totti, and joined Boca Juniors in the 2019-2020 season.

In Argentina he played seven games and scored a goal.

In his career, De Rossi won the 2006 World Cup in Germany with the team then trained by Marcello Lippi. He also reached the final of Euro 2012, lost against Spain.
