In order to reduce adverse drug reactions and have a better response in the body to combat osteoporosis, students of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) they developed a transdermal patch with biodegradable polymeric hollow microneedles, which release alendronate sodium through the skin.

The proposal, made by the student of the Bachelor of Pharmacy, Jessica Aglae Victorino Zúñiga, It consists of the generation of an option that is non-invasive and efficient, in addition to increasing the bioavailability (degree and speed with which an active form reaches its site of action) of the drug.
How does the patch work to treat osteoporosis?
Is a transdermal patch coupled to biodegradable polymeric hollow microneedles, which allows the key substance for the treatment of osteoporosis (alendronate sodium) to be delivered through the skin in areas where there is not much hair and prevent it from shedding, such as the lumbar and abdominal regions and forearm.
With this measure, the adverse reactions at the esophageal and gastric level that the drug generates after its ingestion are avoided.
Due to its micrometric size it does not cause pain and allows any activity to be carried out without problem. The patient can apply it without the need for support from medical personnel.
José Juan Escobar Chávez, academic of the Faculty of Higher Studies (FES) Cuautitlán, indicated that the osteoporosis It is a silent disease that generates bone inconsistency and people do not feel it until a fall or sudden movement generates a fracture.
“Unfortunately, in the population there is no culture to check bone status, which is ultimately our support. Those who suffered one such fracture have a 50 percent chance of suffering a second.
“Bone fragility is a reality, lifestyle and the same age make a person more prone to such situations,” he declared.
He explained that over the years bone fragility increases and with it the number of hip fractures, in particular, which is disabling and severely affects quality of life; in many cases people become dependent and require specialized care.
Escobar Chávez thanked the support granted for this research of the projects PAPIIT IG 100220, PAPIME PE 201420 and Conacyt CF-140617 and highlighted that the patent has already been requested before the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property.
