Authorize use of ivermectin in Misiones
The minister of Health of Misiones, Oscar Alarcón signed the document by which the province authorizes supply ivermectina to patients with coronavirus.
WHAT IS INVERMECTIN AND WHAT EFFECT DOES IT HAVE?
In September of this year, the results of the project “Evaluation of the antiviral effect of the drug ivermectin against SARS-CoV-2” were known, in charge of a public-private consortium led by Dr. Alejandro Krolewiecki of the Institute for Research on Tropical Diseases of the Oran Regional Headquarters of the National University of Salta (UNSa).
The study evaluating the effect of ivermectin on the replication of SARS-CoV-2 in patients with COVID-19 found that the administration of ivermectin at a dose of 0.6 milligrams per kilogram of weight (three times the usual amount) produces the faster and deeper shedding of the virus when treatment is started early in the infection (up to 5 days from the onset of symptoms).
Since then, the results were received with expectation in provinces that had already been analyzing the use of this drug, including Misiones, whose governor Oscar Herrera Ahuad had already instructed specialists from the Province’s Ministry of Health and the National Institute of Health in March. Tropical Medicine (INMET) based in Puerto Iguazú that will analyze the application of ivermectin for compassionate use.
At that time, Alarcón had highlighted that ivermectin is a cheap antiparasitic that is manufactured in Misiones and that the ministry is already working on a protocol for the preventive application of this drug.
Antiparasitic widely used in medicine
Ivermectin is an antiparasitic drug widely used in human and veterinary medicine, and according to the CONICET researcher at the National University of Salta, “the limitations of the in-vitro model are that it ignores the immune component of the host and does not take into account the balance between drug concentration versus viral load ”, something that is typical in the evaluation of the antiviral activity of drugs in Acute Respiratory Infections such as COVID-19 and influenza.
Throughout the country it is best known for its veterinary use as it is the active principle of the Ivomec brand antiparasitic, the most widely used in livestock. From the laboratory that makes it, they clarified that their product is for veterinary use and that it can cause negative health effects if it is supplied to humans.
